save polaroid!

you've probably heard by now that polaroid will stop making film this year. if you're a polaroid photographer, especially if you shoot 600 or spectra, this really sucks, because there are no alternatives out there right now. fujifilm's only integral option is instax...which is not sold in north america, only abroad (and on ebay, but that goes without saying); and they manufacture their own peel-apart packfilm, so those who shoot with those sorts of cameras aren't as impacted by the news. (i know there are some that prefer polaroid's films to fujifilm's in this regard, but still.)
yes, digital could be considered "instant"; but, as i see it, it's not really "instant", is it? before there was digital, there was polaroid. with digital you have to load your card onto your computer, make adjustments (if necessary), and then print your photo. with polaroid cameras, you just set up your shot and, well, hit the shutter! and out comes the film (either by you pulling a tab or it ejecting itself from the camera). sounds a lot yummier (and more interesting) than digital to me.
now, i have nothing against digital photography or digital photographers. hell, i've shot a pretty good deal of digital over the last several years (and i think i've outgrown the camera i have...but that's another story). however, i've always come back to film. i make a point of that. for a while, it was 35mm exclusively. i've since added polaroid to the mix; and i can tell you i've gotten more enjoyment from shooting 35mm and polaroid over the last while than i've ever had shooting digital. my first instant camera was an i-zone; and it was a blast to use. since then, i've used my parents' old onestep (sx-70); last summer i got a spectra off ebay and have used that; and recently, i've added a colorpack IV to the mix and am itching to shoot with that (as soon as i get film for it, of course).
let's keep instant film alive.
read other polaroid photographers' stories and take action! (there's also a flickr group called "save polaroid".)
